The Kokang Batch - LJM Sramanera School in Myanmar

The Kokang region is Special Zone Number 1 of the Shan State in Myanmar. Adjacent to China's Yunan Province, Kokang has forever been a traffic stronghold, and its population primarily consists of offsprings of ethnic Chinese settlers who migrated to this remote area in the late 16th century, and those left behind from the Solitary Army and the Chinese Expedition Forces during WWII. The Myanmar Government has granted them the legal status of a minority named after the location of Kokang. During the military reign and for the sake of economic development, the ‘Old Street’ as the capital of Kokang became a center of legitimate casinos that attracted heavy traffic from neighboring countries. Due to its extraordinary surroundings and geopolitical history, Kokang has remained smitten with frequent eruptions of military disputes since WWII.

Dharma Master Hsin Tao was born in the suburbs of Kokang in 1948, one year before the civil war between the KMT and the CPC came to an end. Orphaned by war, he became a child soldier of the anti-communist Salvation Army of Yunan to survive. At 14 he came to Taiwan with the withdrawal of the Army. Even after he has achieved a lot as a venerated Buddhist leader, the Master hardly ever forgot his birthplace. And when the Ling Jiou Mountain Monastery was founded and initial exchange activities started with counterparts in Myanmar, the Master visited Lashio in Shan State and readily launched efforts of information about his biological mother. Having witnessed the relentless miseries in a war-torn region resulting in widespread poverty and many war orphans, the Master sensed a calling to make contributions to Buddhism for his birthplace. He doubled back to Lashio in search of a proper spot to create a place to educate in Buddhism, which eventually gave rise to the LJM Maha Kusala Yama Monastery in Naung Mon, Lashio.

Life is tough in the suburbs of Lashio. Parents are out and about to make ends meet, leaving them with no means to look after the children, nor any provision for their schooling. Over time and as children grow, they become easy prey of the mob or fall victims to drug cartels. It was small wonder, then, that many parents traveled afar over two days’ journey to send their children to our School of Sramaneras when the word was out that we were open for business. They just wanted their children to stay out of harm's way.

As the School of Sramaneras is situated at Naung Mon in Lashio in northern Shan State, there is an ethnic diversity with the Shan/Tai tribe as the majority, followed by the Bulon, the Deon, and the Kokang (Han) tribes. Nearby temples are also mostly Tai temples, where sermons are given in Tai. As a result, pupils at our School of Sramaneras speak Tai in private amongst themselves. Our Bhikkuhs and teachers command Burmese primarily, and pupils of Kokang background speak their mother tongue in a Yunan dialogue. Such an ethnic diversity is a given in the background of our School, and classes are given in English, Chinese, as well as in the Pali language, thereby adding to the daunting task of communications on our campus. It is both a challenge and a blessing in disguise when it comes to cross-cultural communications and learning.

When we started filming and according to the teachers, Kokang pupils are more of a headache than Tai pupils: they are more energetic and simply would not sit still for a minute. And their pranks are more than can be dealt with by the two Tai teachers giving lessons in Chinese. But once they get to know one another better, the bonding gets tighter over time as well.

Most of our pupils are either from single-parent families or they are orphans. What awaits them is barely any materialistic support, but harsh challenges of life. Their need and yearning for family love, however, are forever tangible, as can be seen in the innocent feedback from the pupils when our young teaching faculty shares the warmth of care. The impact of the sensation really gets to you when you go visit the pupils’ homes and see how they barely manage to come by. More often than not you see the pupils’ mothers taking factory work home so that they can look after their toddlers when necessary. They thus earn a daily wage of about US$2-dollars, and a tuition fee is simply beyond their capacity. Such poverty is, however, a widespread scenario in rural Myanmar and the government falls short of means to take care of the underprivileged minorities, and the temples and religious establishment pick up the tab to provide basic education. Against such a backdrop, the LJM Maha Kusala Yama Monastery has not been shy in employing high-end hard- and software for the facilities. The school thus has become a focal point for people living nearby.

Pupils of the Kokang batch started their schooling in June 2016. They entered into a modern-day environment of education from remote countryside, without even knowing how the toilet flushes clean. They adapt well and they have started to show improvement in their scorecards. The pressure of poverty of the families, however, continues to follow the pupils around. In the case of the three Yang brothers, the brightest YANG Jih-Ming disrobed to return to secular life and worked for salaries to help the family finance because their mother fell ill. A younger YANG Jih-Ying also interrupted his studies to get a salaried job under the persuasion by the elder brother. They returned to the Kokang village and the elder one got a job as a security guard, and the younger worked at the LJM Eco-Farm with the help of Master Chang Lo. Without a rigid school curriculum and seemingly free, but the younger Yang watched kids of his own age go to classes and play in the schoolyard day in and day out. Before long, he started missing his own school days.

The life of a young Sramanera is challenging as well as boring. Getting up early to start the morning prayers by 5 o'clock, then language classes in Pali, Chinese, English, and Burmese besides other curriculum subjects like math until late afternoon and early evening, only to continue with the evening prayers in the Pali language until 9:30. In contrast with what kids of the same age in Taiwan have for their daily routine, it would be hard to fathom how young Sramaneras in Myanmar spend their school days.

But the younger Yang's experience in disrobing yet returning to become a Sramanera again afforded us as the camera crew the realization that it takes some harsh life lessons for comparison for one to genuinely appreciate the true bliss of the way of the Buddha and Dharma. Hence, the younger Yang made up his mind to return to the school from drifting around and be with his fellow pupils. He was asked multiple times during our filming what his feelings were and he was always quite candid and said that he couldn’t wait until he returned to the classrooms to don the monk's robe and learn among his peers. He aspires to emulate our Shih-Fu (Dharma Master Hsin Tao) to be able to help convert many souls.

A young pupil about to enter puberty, Sramanera YANG Jih-Ying proudly proclaims that ‘although he is not certain that he could make it (to reach the level of our Shih-Fu), I sure am positive about giving it my best shot !’
